Steel manufacturer Nucor Corporation (NYSE: NUE) reported lower sales and net profit for the third quarter of 2023. The company also provided guidance for the fourth quarter.
Third-quarter 2023 net profit declined sharply to $1.14 billion or $4.57 per share from $1.69 billion or $6.50 per share in the corresponding period of last year.
The bottom line was negatively impacted by a 16% fall in net sales to $8.78 billion. Total shipments decreased 2% year-over-year to 5.75 million tons, hurt mainly by an 8% fall in bars shipments.
The company said it expects fourth-quarter 2023 earnings to decrease compared to the third quarter due primarily to lower pricing across all three operating segments, and, to a lesser extent, decreased volumes.
